BRUNEI: HARI RAYA AIDILADHA / FIRST DAY OF HIJRAH 1428..
HARI RAYA AIDILADHA
It’s a day to celebrate Muslims who are performing their Hajj completely in the Holy City of Mecca.
Base on Islamic history, Hari Raya Aidiladha is a remembrance day to Prophet Ibrahim A.S receiving a message from Allah S.A.W via his dream. In his dream, he was asked to slaughter his son, Prophet Ismail A.S. His son was a bit surprised to hear this from his father. However, he was willing to be sacrificed, as he believed that it was probably part of a test on both of their loyalty to Allah The Almighty. Seeing their devotion, Allah S.A.W transformed Prophet Ismail A.S into a sheep.
It is also known as ‘Hari Raya Korban’, as ‘korban’ is a Malay word which means sacrifice. It is how it all originates that it is a celebration where Muslims started to slaughter animals such as camel, cow, cattle and sheep. Mainly those who are more than capable in terms of wealthiness do these.
Last Hari Raya Aidiladha, my family and I celebrated it at my aunt’s house – my dad’s elder sister- in Lambak Kanan. Prior to that, we went to the mosque at my village to perform the Aidiladha’s prayers first thing in the morning.
The way we celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha is just like Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It’s the day for Muslims to forgive and forget.
Like any other celebrations in Brunei, it’s usually a day of festivities full with wonderful food served on the table. We were served with Rendang, Nasi Beryani, Ketupat and many others. My favorite was Lemang; it’s glutinous rice that is cooked in bamboo.
FIRST DAY OF HIJRAH 1428
It’s a beginning of a new Islamic year in the Islamic calendar. It is to be celebrated on every first day of the first month – Muharram – in the Islamic calendar.
On the last day of Hijrah 1427, the 19th January 2007, we went to the mosque before the call for Maghrib prayers to attend the reading of ‘End-of-Year prayers’. Then, we performed Maghrib prayers followed by the ‘New-Year prayers’ led by the Imam.
‘Hijrah’ simply mean changes. Muslims usually aims for a change in this New Year. It can be a new change in terms of attitude, successfulness or else. I for instance, would like to modify my life cycle. I would like to study even harder this year so that I can do well in my A’ Level Exam. I aim to do well, so that I can help to improve my family standard of living by getting a promising career that is either a geologist or a lecturer. I wish to reduce my parent’s burden.
