SLOVENIA: Slovene Cultural Holiday- 8th February
On this Day in 1849, France Prešeren, Slovenia’s greatest poet, was born in Kranj. To honour him Slovenes chose this day to be their cultural day.
The text of the Slovene national anthem is the seventh stanza of a Toast by him. And this is our national anthem:
Let's drink that every nation
Will live to see that bright day's birth
When neath the sun's rotation
Discent is banished from the earth,
Kill will be
Kinfolk free
With neighbours none in enemity
Will live to see that bright day's birth
When neath the sun's rotation
Discent is banished from the earth,
Kill will be
Kinfolk free
With neighbours none in enemity
Our greatest poet presented on 2 euro Slovenian coin
France Preseren and his poems
