The Tatra Mountains are home to the Zakopane style, recognized in Poland as a national architectural style.
It was formed in the second half of the 19th century, when the highlander center of Zakopane, today the region's most famous resort, became an important travel destination and residence for cepry-as Polish highlanders call their compatriots from the lowlands.
One of the first settlers was Stanisław Witkiewicz, a painter and writer fascinated with highland culture and decorative art of the Podhale region. According to his design, the most famous wooden buildings, representative of the new style, such as the chapel on Jaszczurówka and Willa pod Jedlami were constructed in Zakopane.
