Reflections and pictures from the 17th Open Air School in Czech Repuplic

Elisabeth Douhane 2010-05-23

60 pupils between 11 and 16, 7 teachers and 3 volunteers working and living together during a week in Sloup, Terezin, Prague and Litvinov.

New experiences and meetings every day. Also a group with 23 adults were with us on the journey.
Staying in small cottages together gives possibilities to make new friends easily.

Eating three homemade typical Czech meals a day, gives a true feeling what it is like to live in Czech Republic. (Breakfast buffet)

The 10 positive rules of the week

The guideline during the week is the 10 rules. They are clear and they are followed by everyone. If not, we talk about it until the problem is solved.
BE HAPPY - BE POSITIVE - ENJOY IT - BE TOGETHER - SPEAK ENGLISH - PLAY FAIR - SMILE - SHARE YOUR THINGS AND IDEAS - LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE - BEHAVE

Every morning the program for the day is on the cola machine. Sunday's program looks like this

A very important lesson about the Terezin history

Petra, who works at Terezin, was our personal guide all day. Her knowledge, professionalism and her pedagogical way of telling us about what happened during the Second World War made us more aware of life now and then.

Back home after dinner, gather in clubroom reflecting upon what we shared at Terezin. Pictures show the feelings. Sitting in a ring, pictures are shown and a few words from everybody create togetherness.

Our own Olympic Games

Pavla gives instructions to one of the teams in the Olympics. The team members are very very concentrated and focused.

Performance in a forest theatre

Swedish and Czech traditions are presented at the ancient forest theatre.

The funny Disco Party with Åsa and Jerka

The disco evening turns into a happy Åsa and Jerka party. The two teachers show how to have fun and dance without any hesitations. Just follow and feel the rhythm.

"Seeking and finding" i Prague

The Prague Game during a couple of hours in groups. Find the answers and report as fast as possible. 70 "Open Air children" hunting information among thousands of tourists is an amazing sight.

Disman´s Radio Children Ensemble

Disman's Radio Children Ensemble, who visited Linghemsskolan with "Never be Alone" two years ago, guide us through the game and invite us to Minor Theatre in the evening, where they perform a children's opera.

Evaluation of the week.

Traditional ginger bread specially made for us from our Czech friends.

Last 24 hours in families in Litvinov and Mezibori.

Headmaster of Mezibori School and Major of the town invite teachers and adults for an appreciation party in the evening. Open Air School has a wide spread reputation and we are very proud to be a part of this never ending bridge building project.

Would you like to host a czech boy or girl in September?
September 23rd, 20 Open Air pupils from Mezibori and Litvinov arrive together with 25 children from Disman's Radio Ensemble. We have the opportunity to arrange a whole week's program for about 50 young people and in return we will get lots if experience and new friends. The Ensemble will give free performances of "Brundibar" to interested schools. This will be another way to keep on building bridges into a future of trust and peace together.
50 host families are needed. Are you interested, get in touch with Linghemsskolan: Elisabeth Douhane, Ann Jonsson, Åsa Jonsson or Anita Nilsson
