“Manuel Azaña Secondary School” was established in 1983 and is a co-educational state school. It offers lower secondary education (ages12-14), upper secondary education (ages14-16) as well as Baccalaureate (ages16-18). At this level our school specialises both in Social Sciences and Humanities and also in Health and Natural Sciences. We also have Vocational Training Studies (ages18-20). There are currently 900 pupils and 83 teachers.

The school offers extensive academic facilities including three science laboratories, two libraries, three ITC centres, two music rooms, one covered sports hall, a cafeteria and sports facilities including basketball courts and football pitches.

We all have to study Spanish and English. French is an optional language. Then we have many compulsory subjects: Spanish language and literature, Maths, History, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, P.E., Art, Music, Technology and many others. There are also plenty of optional subjects especially in the upper levels.

The academic year

In Spain the academic year runs from early September to late June, which means that we have two months summer holidays. We also have two weeks holidays at Christmas and one week at Easter. There are also short term breaks along the year. Classes start at 8.30 and finish at 15.15 with one break in the middle of the morning: from 11.10 to 11.40. Daily we have six 50-minute lessons and between classes 5 minutes free to change classrooms or laboratories.

In addition to the academic studies, our school has always offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities including musical and theatrical productions, visiting museums and centres of educational values, taking part in excursions of a social and cultural nature and one day trips to places of interest in and around Madrid.

This school year 2007-2008 we are celebrating the school 25th Anniversary and there will be plenty of activities going on along the year.

Our hometown is Getafe, only 15 minutes far from Madrid, the capital city of Spain. It has around 160.000 inhabitants. It is a nice place to live and there are lots of things to do here. There are two big leisure centres, many shops, several cinemas and sports centres. There are also two really big parks which are fantastic for nice weather. There is a new theatre, a museum and a small airport. We have an old nice cathedral and many churches. Getafe is also the home-town of one of the best universities in Spain: “Carlos III University”. And last but not least there is a new football stadium because our football team “Getafe C.F.” plays in Spanish First Division and UEFA Cup.
