A very warm welcome to our English-speaking readers! Tunabladet is the award winning webzine of our school, Tunaskolan, in Luleå - very northern Sweden.

We are glad to have you visiting us and please notice there is always lots of material available for you in English! We use web links extensively in our articles so using the the web browser Back button is often a good idea, to avoid getting lost. And, of course, you can always find your way back to this intro through the link almost on top in the left column of the webzine.

Information about Sweden

To learn more about Sweden, it can be fun to take a look at the famous "spy bible" CIA Factook and then perhaps compare with the official Sweden.se! For a presentation of the Swedish school system, please click here.

Pretty much everything worth knowing about Luleå is, of course, also available on the web right here.

Presentation of Tunaskolan

We have a streaming version of a Power Point presentation on-line that also includes quite a few nice photos from our area. You'll find the presentation here.

Much more than a homepage

The very first editorial staff of Tunabladet in 2003, at the Media Lab of course!

Tunabladet is much more than a static, traditional school homepage - we run a real, alive-and-kicking newspaper on the web and the focus is on the editorial work.

An official publishing licence

Tunabladet is also one of the very few - possibly the one and only - Swedish school webzine that has aquired a publishing licence from the Swedish Radio and TV Authority. This licence grants the webzine the same constitutional publishing rights as to any other Swedish newspaper.

Largest reader base in Sweden

The webzine was made available to anyone through the internet in April 2003 and the total number of visitors for the first year turned out to be just below 10.000. The final toll of unique visitors for the year 2004 was 35.000. The year after, the whopping total was more than 80.000! No other Swedish school web publication comes even close to these figures.

Principal legally responsible

The principal for grades 7-9, Stefan Millgård, is legally responsible for Tunabladet. The day-to-day operation of the webzine - and the publishing decisions - are supervised by the undersigned.

Awards and nominations

We are one of the best!

We are one of the best!

Our webzine has received acclaim both in Sweden and abroad. In 2004, Tunabladet received the regional Spira-award (a Swedish link) for pedagogical excellence and was also nominated a Top100 eLearning site by eLearning Awards. To put the eLearning Awards Top 100 nomination in perspective: the total number of entries received was larger than 1000!

Further, many Swedish (and one Finnish) newspapers have written very positive comments about our work. The comments - in Swedish language - can be found here.

Global contacts and communication

At our school we focus more and more on international contacts; part of this work is always available through the International section of the webzine. Since 2003 we have an established project with Halberstadt in Germany (a Comenius-project). As examples please see, from our German friends, this Power Point presentation and an article about Halberstadt Old Town.

Our global school forum

In 2005, we created a new forum for school contacts on global level - all schools around the world are very welcome to join us and our friends through the very popular TB Global!

Member of ENIS and eTwinning

Further, Tunaskolan is a member of European Network for Innovative Schools, a EU-initiative aiming at development and sharing of new ideas in education. Read more about ENIS here and see the TB article about the EU conference in Brussels January 2005 - eTwinning launch, finding partner schools - here. The 2006 eTwinning conference in Austria was also covered on location by Tunabladet, see the article here.

Communication has high priority

Naturally, practicing communivative skills is a very important part of the school curriculum, and thereby publishing the webzine fits in perfectly. Next exciting step is using telephony and video conferencing through the internet for global connections.

The media message

Adina's beautiful painting from 2005

Adina's beautiful painting from 2005

For many years, our Media Lab has been a unique resource for Tuna students and personnel. Presently, however, the operation of Media Lab is being restructured due to budget cuts in our school district.

A good example of earlier student work at the Media Lab is a multimedia presentation about cloning from 2003: if you have a good internet connection, you can see this job as a flash film (have some patience!) here.

Another award-winning student job is the French-language 3-minute Western from 2005 called Winter Robbery, Le Vol d'hiver. You need to install the XviD-codec to view the 40Mb film - then right-click (and choose Save target as..) here.

Arts studies and performances also form an important part of the students' activities at Tunaskolan. Every year, the senior students have a traditional concert that is extremely popular. You'll find an article about the 2005 concert - with music, of course! - here. To see some beautful painitngs by younger students, please click here.

A bit more about Tunaskolan

Roughly 400 students

Tunaskolan is a comprehensive school for students from nine to 16 years and, all in all, we have some 400 students. Tunabladet has an editorial staff where we normally have two students from each of the last three grades. Naturally, all the students at our school both publish articles and read them!

Beautiful surroundings

Our school is located fairly close to the city center in Luleå - a 30-minute walk and you're in downtown Luleå. Close by the school flows the beautiful Luleå river.

If you have the free Adobe Reader installed, you can view professional Luleå winter photos on full screen. The gallery is available as a 40Mb pdf-file so it might take a while to download. Right-click and download the gallery here. Then, view it locally using Acrobat Reader. The photos by Sven Nordstedt are worth waiting for!

If you have trouble downloading, the school district server might be temporarily down - please come back later!
