TV VIOLENCE SURVEY

STAGE TEAM 2006-01-19

During November and December 2005 the STAGE Team in the Elementary School «Ivan Goran Kovacic» in Slavonski Brod, Croatia, conducted a survey on TV violence. It was our contribution to the «Week Without Violence at School and Community». The survey lasted 10 days. Fifteen children aged 11-12 were watching TV programmes and noted violent pictures.

Shocking results

Team One watched one hour of morning, Team Two one hour of afternoon and Team Three on hour of prime-time television. They recorded the number of violent pictures.
The results were shocking. Even the children were surprised by so many violent acts shown in their living rooms. They didn't expect that, they believed that the harmful scenes hadn't had any influence to their everyday lives. They have changed their minds.

Murders and violence

During the ten-day period, they saw excatly 163 murders in films and commercials for new films.
Team One noted down 69 physical attacks. Team Two recorded 57 violent scenes in music spots and cartoons. Team Three described horrified scenes in movies shown from 9-11 pm.

What did they say?

Some of them said:
«I couldn't watch lots of scenes, they were so bloody.»
«I didn't know there was so much violence on television.»
«I could handle killing and bloodsheet in movies. I watch them every day. Nothing special!»
«I think there should be less violence on television and more documentaries and educational programmes.»
«I don't agree. Films are fiction. The reality is even more cruel. Just watch the news from Iraq!»
«Have you seen a good film without violence?»

What do you think?

Should we worry about violence on TV? We can read about this problem in many papers, books, scientific researches... We talk about it with our teachers, parents, with our friends. Some of them can't see any reasons to reduce violence on TV.
