Optional time

In our school we have something that is called optional time. In these lessons can our students choose among different subjects. So every fourth week do they write their own timetable.
One of the intentions for optional time is that the students should learn to take responsibility for their learning. The teachers are more like a tutor in these classes. Most often do we also have access to the computer-room and the library then.
And now, what do YOU like optional time? What are the good/bad things? Do you learn better when you get this kind of freedom? When do you learn best?
