Philippines: Lang-ay draws crowds in Mountain Province

Cordillera Regional Science High School Philippines 2006-04-24

Thousands of people from different places drove the dusty roads of halsema highway to reach Bontoc, Mountain Province for the festive cultural celebration of the LANG-AY.

"Lang-ay is a common term among the tribes of the Mountain Province that means sharing", Governor Maxima B. Dalog of Mountain Province explained.
Different tribes of the ten municipalities of Mountain Province have shown their exotic culture during the celebration of the 2nd Lang-ay Festival that was held in Bontoc the capital town of Mountain Province which is north of Manila.
Lang-ay was a showcase of original costumes, colorful bags of ethnic designs, young and old people dancing, free taste of native wine and colorful and genuine ceramic jars or what the folks call as "gosi" .
Cultural dances portrayed daily activities of the tribes people-rituals that were done when people get sick, die, head hunting rites, planting and harvesting.
The men in their ornate head gear and g-strings beat the gongs and bamboo to create the harmonious music which women clad in their colorful beads and "tapis"-native skirt can stride with in their graceful steps.
