Reflections of Joan Tinoyan, a fourth year student in her school, Cordillera Regional Science High School, La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines

The Philippines: Cordillera Regional Science High School-My School
By: Joan Tinoyan (student) & Soraya Faculo (Teacher)

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved through the people around and the school that made the difference.”

Crrrrnnggg… the bell rings and every student makes his way to the doorways of classrooms. All teachers, with their big smiles, are at their desks prepared to see their new family. Everyone is excited to begin a new chapter of her/his life. It’s the first day of school and no one knows what is in store this year.

Four years ago, we made the biggest steps of our lives, the toughest transitions, yet the best decision. We never imagined we have come this far. Our experiences in our school has molded us to become the person we are today.

Cordillera Regional Science High School, an environment where teachers and students nurture each other is a top performing school in the Cordillera Region of the Philippines(visit www.crshs.com). Being the only Regional Science High School in the region, students are rigidly screened when they apply for the 1st year level and are continually screened as they move on to the 4th year level. Students have access to equipment and materials as they are only limited to 36 in a class. There are 2 classes in each year level.

The curriculum is enriched with units in Science Mathematics and English in additional to the standard requirements of the Basic Educational Curriculum. Additional Subjects and electives are also offered but limited to the same disciplines and should not exceed eight (8) hour program in school.
OUr enriched Science Subjects are: Earth Science/ Environmental Science, Advanced Biology / Research in Biology.

To be continually updated by new learning and approaches to innovative teaching are the challenges that teachers face each day as they teach inquisitive and pro-active students.
