BRUNEI: THE TRUE MEANING OF NATIONAL DAY /23 February '07

Rabiatul Adawiyah 2007-03-12

This year's national day's theme is "Commitment Empowering the Nation's Capabilities". This theme is actually in relation to the last three themes of previous national day celebrations. The highlight of the event was the large-scale performance participated by 7850 people of whom 2800 were students and the remaining from various sectors (both government and non-governments) from the local communities. The extremely numerous and tiring rehearsals prior the main event have helped tune the performance into perfection. The dedication and commitment of the participants displayed their patriotic spirit and earned the applause of all who witnessed the event.

My feeling of the National Day was fitting encouragement for me, one of those who needed to boost my feelings of patriotism. Youngsters need encouragement to show the nation's sovereignty and boost our sense of pride. It was suitable for our youngster generation as it's time we faced-up to new challenges in the global arena to be part of a strong country standing high among others in the world.

The true meaning of a national day is as a remembrance for declaration of independence since the last 23 years. It was surely not an easy thing to get; it's been a great hard work done by the late and former 28 th ruler, the father of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. We shouldn't take this by granted.

We need to appreciate and be thankful to God for us to live peacefully and in harmony in such a beautiful and lovable country, 'The Land of Unexpected Treasure'.

Especially the youngsters have to plant the seed of patriotism in their selves since young. We can show the feeling of love and loyal to the country and our monarch by taking part in the celebration even if it's only a small part. This includes coming to the venue and together with everyone else, show our loyalty through the reading of the National Oath and cheers with everyone else for our freedomness.
