Last meeting in Poland  (July 2009)

Ewa Kurzak 2009-07-18

12th July Maria and Blanca - the teachers from Spain comes to Cracow. First they visited the monuments of the Cracow town.
Cracow(is situated in Lesser Poland) is a good example of Culture and History. It is visited by people from all over the world, included a lot from Spain.
There, we could see a beautiful city with good public transport, full of tourists, good prices, nice meals and security.
The main advantages are that Cracow has got low costs flights and good transports to the rest o Poland.
Kracow, the visit to the beautiful landscapes of Karpacs during our previous meetings, has allowed us to know us the borders of Silesia.

The concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau

Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp

Not very far, only 31 Km far away, we visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, that was the site of the deaths of hundreds of people, mostly ethnic Poles, Jews and soviet prisoners. It was the largest of Nazi Germany's concentration camps and extermination camps, established in Nazi German occupied Poland.
The camp was initially used for interning Polish intellectuals and resistance movement members, then also for Soviet Prisoners of War. Common German criminals, "anti-social elements" and 48 German homosexuals were also imprisoned there. Jews were sent to the camp as well, beginning with the very first shipment (from Tarnów). The camp's prisoners who left the camp during the day for construction or farm labor were made to march through the gate to the sounds of an orchestra. The camp commandant, Rudolf Höss, testified at the Nuremberg Trials that up to 3 million people had died at Auschwitz.
There are a Museum of History and The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust
The study of history helps us avoid repeating the same mistakes.
