Ann-Christines letter to Paul´s dad

Ann-Christin Johansson 2006-03-16

1. Sköter Paul alla sina studier via internet?

Yes, Paul does all studies via internet. The material is mailed by post and he’s maintaining email and web-conference contact with the individual teachers for each subject. The school has no function as such – except supplying us with the needed material to follow the country’s curriculum and to check on Paul’s tests. Once or twice a year he gets assessed by the School’s psychologist to adjust the school material to his abilities and to let him progress depending to his personal development. He’ll be 13 coming September and is in year 9 (second year high school) working with material of year 10 and 11 (3rd and 4th year high school). His program was made available for GAT (gifted and talented children). I personally don’t find Paul gifted – he’s just having all the advantages from one to one tutoring.. what can’t be compared with any other schooling methods.

We are having an old weather board house in Sandstone (Western Australia) – that’s a 110 year old ‘Wildwest town’ with just 60 inhabitants. By turn of the century we had more than 10,000 gold diggers around here but now it’s a ghost town in the Australian desert – about 500 kilometres from the next bigger city.

We came to Sandstone 1986 and I will probably spend the end of my days here… but travelling is our main occupation. Short trips are for 4 to 6 weeks normal length would be 3 to 8 months and from time to time we’re away for 12 to 18 months to do extensive tours and explorations. I myself travelled the Globe since 1962. You would probably call me an Adventurer. These days we earn an income by digging Gold nuggets out of the ground and taking tourists with us on our adventure tours.

Paul is my only son and yes – he’s the only ‘student’. My level of education allows me to teach right trough high school – into University level.. and we have the permission from the Department of Education to home educate allowing us to maintain our life-style.

I know Sweden a little bit --- as I did spend lots of time studying throughout Europe in my younger days. Yes, our stations (farms) are 100,000 to 1 Million Acres. 1,000 Acres are called hobby farms. This is mainly due to the poor soil quality and low productivity levels per Acre.

Kindest regards
Fred
