Dear Ann-Christin

Annie 2006-03-31

I hope that the responses my students have written will be helpful to your students. We are very lucky to live in this country as it is so big and with a relatively small but productive population.

We have lots of space around us, beautiful weather (most of the time) and a very easy way of life. We have all just finished watching the Commonwealth games which is an international event between all countries who are or were part of the Commonwealth of England. It was a lot of fun and some of the students even managed to get to Melbourne to watch the events. One of our senior boys just narrowly missed selection for the swimming team! To get onto the swimmingteam is very difficult as we have so many very strong swimmers here...even just to get to the selections is very hard, so he did well to get that far.

Re the cyclone and our location - we are about 150km from the nearest, part of the coastline and about 1,500km south of where the cyclone was!
The ACT (Australian Capital Territory) which is where Canberra is, is like a small state within the state of New South Wales (NSW). It was originally created as a government "state" similar to DC as in Washington DC in the USA. Canberra is a very pretty city with lots of trees, bicycle paths and a big lake in the centre. We are close to the coast, the mountains for skiing (about 1.5 hours) and to both Melbourne and Sydney. We feel that
the location is extremely "handy" for most people.
Please let me know if there is anything else you'd like to know about...

Best wishes,
Annie
