Hello Sweden!

the Czech rep 2008-04-02

Today we are going to tell you about our traditional meals.

In our school we have a good school canteen. Majority of students have lunch there. Our school lunch is quite cheap, about 20 CZK which is about 6 SEK. There are 4 cooks and they prepare lunches for school and kindergarten kids and also morning and afternoon snacks for kindergarten.

Every day we have some soup and a main course. Our favorite kinds are goulash soup and cabbage soup. For the main course we like meals with dumplings and some sauce. Czech dumplings are a kind of a side dish made from wheat flour or mashed potato mixture, boiled in water, usually roll – shaped, can be sliced and is served hot.

Sauces are very popular in our school, mainly tomato sauce and sauce served with sirloin of beef. We all like chicken with rice, pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes, fried fish with potato salad, fried potato croquettes with spinach, sweet fruit filled dumplings, small cakes with vanilla blancmange, apple bread puding.

At home, our mothers cook very often. In some families they cook every day. Favourite meals at home are fried potato pancakes with lots of garlic, fried cheese, meat goulash, sausages and bratwursts with mustard, chips with ketchup or pizza. We also like open-face sandwiches.
Many families prefer healthy diet, lots of vegetables and fruit, meals of pulses and cereals, or just some bread with home made spread. Many mothers make their own jams and bottled fruit and pickled vegetables. Regularly they bake various kinds of cakes, bunt cakes, pies, cookies and scones. Favorite kinds of filling are sweet curd filling, prunes, minced poppy seed filling, apple or dried fruit filling.

Our bread is dark, people like whole meal bread with lots of seeds. We also have white rolls, like a small French loaf.
People say that Czech meals are high in calories, fat and sugar. In the cities many people visit reastaurants and eat Asian, South European meals or go to fast food restaurants to get some chicken and vegetable salads.

We do not have lessons on cooking at school, it is a pity. Many girls learn how to cook from their mothers. In the countryside it isn´t common to go to restaurants, because we do not have any which serve meals here. Only in Dub there is a restaurant providing guests with hot meals. Small villages have only pubs offering drinks and cold snach.

In Olomouc area there is a popular kind of smelling ( stinky ) curd cheese. It is so famous that has a museum!
