The LAJKONIK is the symbol of Kraków and celebrates the triumph of a brave bargeman, over Han, chief of the invading Tatars in the in the year 1287. Upon learning of Han’s death, his Tatars lost their fighting spirit and fled Krakow. In joyous celebration, the brave bargeman dressed himself as Han and triumphantly rode into Krakow with his men to the ovation of all. The people of Krakow nicknamed him Lajkonik.
Every spring since that wonderful day Lajkonik and his procession ride into Krakow spinning and dancing through the streets. As Lajkonik capers and dances, he touches people with his mace. A tap of the mace is said to bring a whole year of good luck.
