DEEP in Poland

Witold Litwin 2004-08-06

The Democracy Education Exchange Project (DEEP) is an international program, which was set up to improve civic and law educattion in many countries from Central and Eastern Europe, and from Newly Independent States of the former Republics of Soviet Union. The program offers a broad range of activities which include seminars, educational visits, home stays, translation and/or development of curricular and training programs.

Polish part of the program consists of three branches, which constitute at the sa,e time three branches of conducted workshops: Democracy, Everyday law and i*EARN.

1. Democracy
The rationale behind this part is learning democracy by acting. The main aim is to help teachers and students identify problems of their local communities and develop projects which are to combat at least one of the problems. Workshops activities include: working out the succeeding stages of the project, searching for partners and funds, designing grant applications and budgets. Designed projects are to be carried out by both students and teachers during the next school year, as part of beyond school curricula.

2. Street Law
This part was designed to make teachers and students more familiar with the functioning of elected and appointed govornments of different levels, rights and duties of citizens, teachers, patients, consumers, etc. A collateral goal of these workshops is to show teachers that lessons about law can be interesting and that even pasing acquaintance with law can be very useful ni everyday life.

3. International Education and Resource Network (iEARN)
This part presents Internet and e-mail as an attractive educational tool and answers the question how to realize international programs and create circles of interests in schools. The more specific target of this workshops is to encourage teachers and students to join the interesting ideas of iEARN programs which for the time being function in 4000 schools in 100 countries
One of the main tasks of the DEEP program is to create and foster a network among educators and policy makers (that is teachers, lecturers form Higher Education Institutions, students, representatives of central and local governments, non-profit organisations) from Central and Eastern Europe, newly independent states of the former Republic of the Societ Union and their counterparts from the United States in order to promote and improve, through exchange of ideas and experiences, civic and law education. iEARN, which in Poland has been led for a few years by Internet Teacher Association, is just to ease such a communication.

Apart from iEARN there are also two other non-government organizations which, through their representatives working for the project, cooperate with the DEEP program. These are: Polish Association of Law Education (www.psep.pl) and Center for Citizenship Education (www.ceo.org.pl). They provide expertise, experience and high quality materials for law and civic education. Also other NGOs, which would like to contribute to the development of the program are very welcomed.

The whole of the international DEEP program is administered by a consortium of American non-profit organisations, such as: The American formu, Inc. New York, Close Up Foundation Washington, DC, Street Law, Inc Washington, DC, constitutional roghts foundation Los Angeles, CA, Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago, IL and others.
