International Children's Day and its Asian roots

Dariusz Zerdzinski 2007-06-03

Hey, it's Children's Day! The right time for adults to wish the little ones who spread fun and laughter in their lives all the best! Let’s wish all the children in the world a great time kidding around!

In some parts of the world, Chidren's Day is celebrated on different days. In Poland likewise in some other countries in Eastern Europe it is celebrated on June 1.

Not many people know that the Children's Day had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva in 1925, and the date June 1 has a Chinese-USA origin and has nothing to do with Communism.

In 1925, the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. This, of course, coincided with the conference mentioned above. June 1 somehow died out in the USA, only to be revived a couple of years ago.

However, each country chose its own day to commemorate it. Most schools, kindergartens and even shopping centres celebrate this day by organising cultural programmes and events for children to engage them in fun and frolic.
