11 November 2008
It came after 123 years of partitions between Tsarist Russia, Prussia and Austria, on 11 November 1918, the day of the Armistice on the Western Front.

Independence Day events are held throughout Poland, including parades, open-air concerts, exhibitions, re-enactments of historical events.

Shortly after the surrender of Germany in November 1918, Poland regained its independence as the Second Polish Republic (II Rzeczpospolita Polska). It reaffirmed its independence after a series of military conflicts, the most notable being the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921) when Poland inflicted a crushing defeat on the Red Army.
The 1926 May Coup of Józef Piłsudski turned the reins of the Second Polish Republic over to the Sanacja movement.
